About Trading Standards

The Trading Standards Service is a local government service which enforces the laws protecting us when we buy, hire and sell goods or services.  Trading Standards is responsible for the enforcement of over 80 Acts of Parliament.

This Legislation requires Trading Standards to carry out a diverse range of duties including:

  • Checking spirit and beer measures in pubs

  • Making sure shops are not selling items like alcohol and cigarettes to minors

  • Checking that toys are safe for children

  • Removing counterfeit goods from sale

  • Checking the accuracy of labelling on food

This list highlights only a small part of the work done by the 22 Trading Standards authorities in Wales.

In addition to this statutory role, Trading Standards also provide advice and education to consumers and businesses about the law. This work is intended to help businesses comply with the law; encourage a fair, safe trading environment and stamp out rogue traders.
